Bullet-resistant glass, which is frequently referred to as bulletproof glass, is a highly engineered, optically transparent security material designed specifically to absorb and dissipate the extreme kinetic energy of incoming ballistic projectiles. Rather than relying on a single thick sheet of standard glass, which would easily shatter under stress, bullet-resistant systems are built using a specialized lamination process. Manufacturers sandwich tough, flexible thermoplastic interlayers—most commonly polyvinyl butyral (PVB), polyurethane, or durable polycarbonate—between multiple alternating layers of solid glass. When a bullet strikes the front face, the exterior glass layers shatter to slow the projectile, while the internal plastic interlayers stretch and flex to absorb the energy, trapping the bullet and preventing dangerous spalling or breakthrough penetration.
