What is terrazzo flooring?

on June 3, 2026

Terrazzo flooring is a premium, exceptionally durable composite flooring material that dates back centuries but remains a staple of modern commercial and high-end residential architecture. Terrazzo is created by embedding a dense mixture of colorful aggregate chips—most commonly marble, quartz, granite, mother-of-pearl, or colorful recycled glass—into a binding matrix material. This binding matrix can consist of a traditional cementitious cement base or a modern, high-strength epoxy resin polymer. The mixture can be poured directly in place on the construction site or installed using pre-fabricated tiles. Once the matrix cures fully, heavy industrial planetary grinding machines fitted with diamond abrasive discs grind the entire floor down, followed by polishing and sealing the surface to reveal a completely smooth, seamless, and high-gloss architectural finish.
