To install a new or replacement residential house window, you must follow a methodical process to ensure energy efficiency and long-term weather protection. First, the rough structural wood opening must be thoroughly cleaned, checked for rot, and lined with self-adhering waterproof sill flashing to manage water intrusion. Next, a generous, continuous bead of high-quality exterior polyurethane sealant is applied along the exterior perimeter of the opening or the window’s installation flange. The window unit is then carefully tipped into the opening from the exterior. Installers place wooden or plastic shims along the sides and bottom to center, level, and square the unit perfectly. Once aligned, the window is securely fastened through its vinyl or aluminum installation flanges into the wall studs, insulated around the interior perimeter using low-expansion foam, and thoroughly caulked outside.
