Is window film bulletproof?

on August 6, 2026

No, standard window film isn’t bulletproof. It’s often marketed as “security film” or “shatter-resistant film,” but it’s not built to stop or even meaningfully slow down a bullet. What it’s actually designed for is holding glass fragments together on impact, which can slow down a burglar or prevent injury from flying glass during a storm or explosion.

Even the thickest security films, around 12-14 mils, don’t have the density or layered construction needed to absorb the kinetic energy of a high-velocity round. A bullet will pass through filmed glass almost as easily as it would through plain glass. The one difference is the glass probably won’t shatter and fall away the way it normally would.

For real bullet resistance, you need ballistic-rated glass built from thick layers of polycarbonate and glass-clad materials. Some setups combine ballistic glass with security film to get both bullet resistance and fragment retention, which is a solid best-of-both-worlds approach. But film by itself should never be treated as ballistic protection.
