Is it illegal to have bulletproof windows?

on August 5, 2026

Yes, it’s legal in the United States for private citizens and business owners to install bulletproof windows, whether it’s a home, an office, or a vehicle. There’s no federal law that prohibits owning or installing ballistic-resistant glass. Some high-risk businesses, like jewelry stores, pawn shops, and banks, actually get pushed toward it by their insurance companies as a condition of coverage.

That said, legal doesn’t always mean unrestricted. Local building codes and HOA rules can still come into play, especially around how the windows look from the outside. The right answer really depends on the building type, how it’s used, and what you’re actually trying to accomplish: full protection, containment, or just enough delay to buy time.
