What can break bullet proof glass?

on August 5, 2026

Breaking bulletproof glass takes serious concentrated force or specialized equipment. It’s not something that happens by accident. A few methods that can breach lower-level bullet-resistant glass: a high-powered rifle if the glass is only rated for handguns, repeated strikes from something heavy like a sledgehammer or an axe, or industrial tools like diamond-tipped saws.

Here’s something worth knowing: most bullet-resistant glass is rated for a specific number of hits. A UL Level 3 window, for instance, might be tested to stop three shots from a .44 Magnum. Hit that same spot a fourth or fifth time, and the glass can finally give way. Extreme heat from a torch can also wear down the plastic interlayers that give the glass its strength over time.

That said, in real-world scenarios, bulletproof glass is close to impossible to get through quickly or quietly. It’s built to withstand exactly the kind of attack most likely in a robbery or an active shooter situation. The actual weak point usually isn’t the glass at all. It’s the framing or the wall around it. That’s why a real security setup reinforces the entire opening, not just the glass itself.
