Installing a traditional glass window pane, historically known as sash glazing, into an existing wood or metal window frame requires patience and proper hand tools. First, you must wear safety gloves to carefully remove all broken shards of old glass, followed by using a putty knife or heat gun to scrape away hardened old glazing compound and old metal glazier’s points down to bare wood or metal. Once clean, brush the frame bed with a layer of linseed oil or primer to prevent the wood from drawing oils out of the new putty. Next, knead a baseball-sized portion of fresh glazing putty until it is warm and smooth, then roll it into thin ropes and press them firmly into the frame bed. Carefully press the new glass pane into this putty bed, insert new metal glazier’s points every six inches to mechanically lock the glass, and apply a neat, beveled perimeter bead of exterior glazing putty along the outside edges.
