Can you install hardwood floors over tile?

on June 5, 2026

Yes, it is entirely possible to install new hardwood flooring directly on top of an existing ceramic or porcelain tile floor, provided the tile subfloor meets strict structural criteria. First, the existing tile must be completely stable, flat, level, and firmly bonded to the underlying concrete or plywood substrate, with absolutely no loose, cracked, or hollow-sounding tiles. Any deep grout lines or slight depressions must be filled using a high-quality cementitious self-leveling compound to create a perfectly smooth plane. Because you cannot easily drive nails or staples into ceramic tile, a traditional solid hardwood floor cannot be nailed down. Instead, you must utilize an engineered hardwood flooring product installed as a floating floor system. This involves rolling out a high-density acoustic underlayment foam over the tile and clicking the interlocking tongue-and-groove wood planks together cleanly.
