How to install vinyl plank flooring?

on June 2, 2026

To install luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring successfully, you must follow a structured process to achieve a smooth, durable, and completely waterproof surface. Begin by ensuring the underlying subfloor is completely clear of dust, debris, and protruding nails, and use a leveling compound to smooth out any dips or bumps greater than 3/16 of an inch. If your vinyl planks do not feature a pre-attached underlayment pad, roll out the manufacturer-approved foam underlayment across the floor. Establish a perfectly straight starting line along your longest wall, placing plastic spacers to maintain a 1/4-inch expansion gap. Snap the interlocking tongue-and-groove joints of the vinyl planks together row by row, using a tapping block and a rubber mallet to lock the seams tightly without damaging the edges. Cut end planks cleanly using a utility knife and a straightedge.
